Minister highlights importance of transport system development |
TEHRAN (IRNA) – Minister of Roads and Transportation Mohammad Rahmati highlighted the necessity of improving the country's transport network to encourage more passengers and goods to be transited through Iran by countries during the Fourth Development Plan. Speaking to IRNA on Monday, he pointed out that Iran's strategic location makes it the convenient East-West corridor connecting South-East and Central Asia to Persian Gulf states and some European countries. Rahmati said that the ministry has plans to establish a transit route in eastern Iran by way of Chabahar and Milak ports for transiting goods to Afghanistan and Iraq. Elaborating on other plans of the ministry to enhance the country's transit position, Rahmati said his ministry was considering a plan for pilgrims from Central Asian countries and Pakistan to reach Saudi Arabia via Iran. Referring to the country's expanding rail or marine transport, he said the required infrastructure for expansion of these sectors should be laid down. "The geographical positioning system (GPS) and new technologies for faster air, sea and ground transport should be exploited," he said.
